Directed by Michael Schultz from a semiautobiographical script by Eric Monte, a creator of the sitcom Good Times, the movie is set in a vocational high school on Chicagos near North Side in 1964. Inspired by the positive reception to Melvin Van Peebles' Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971), Schultz made the trip to Hollywood, where he got work directing on such cop shows as Toma, The Rockford Files and Baretta. The closing credits of the latter even mentioned that it was based on Monte's Cooley High, which always made me curious about this movie. I don't believe any of the actors became famous, but they worked really well together on screen.
